Since my Expedition is really a F-150 from the b-pillars forward, i'm posting this here...
I'm totally mystified. My 2000 Expedition has a recurrent problem that has appeared three times in the last week. When I turn the ignition switch to the crank position, nothing happens (except a clicking sound from the fuse box). And - for some strange reason - the radio and clock wont work either. All the other electrical functions are operative... lights, horn, climate controls, window, door locks, etc. And the problem doesn't seem to be related to the theft system. (The theft light goes off after the key has been turned to the on postion.) Then, after a while, the darn thing starts right up.
I was thinking it might be a neutral safety switch problem, but I'd like to know what anyone out there thinks...
I have the same problem with my 2000 F150.... everything works but the radio... if I wait half an hour or so and try again, it cranks fine... I am suspicious of a heat related problem. Someone told me to check the ground wires on the battery. Going to do that now.
I may have found the problem - it's not the wire I suspected yesterday. Instead, it seems to be a faulty starter relay (mounted on the firewall on passenger side). I was tapping on it with the switch in the on position and the radio came on! I tried shorting across the two posts with my screwdriver and voila, it cranked right up. Not sure what that has to do with the radio, but then again wiring has always mystified me. I am going to replace the starter relay today and see if that solves the problem.
I replaced the starter relay about 10 days ago and the problem has not reoccurred. I'd really like to find out why the radio is linked to starter relay. No one at the dealer has an answer either. Maybe the damn thing was designed by a decendent of Edsel Ford...
Just a note... I went to three different auto parts chain stores in northern Georgia before I found out that their computer software (do they all use the same database?) doesn't include a part listing for the firewall-mounted relay for 2000 model F150. One guy argued with me that the truck only has a starter mounted relay until I brought the truck to him and pointed to the part I needed. He looked in the computer under 1999 and 2001 F150 and finally found the listing (both models). I ran into the same problem trying to buy a transmission fluid filter.
I guessing some computer programmer goofed when it comes to the 2000 model. I've learned to ask for the 2001 model when they claim my truck doesn't have the part I need!
