My buddy just got his "new to him" V10 and he is dying to get some more sound out of it.
We were talking about taking the cat out, and putting in a flowmaster 40 series. And he mentioned the O2 sensor behind the cat. So we aren't gonna touch that.
But then he was talking about cutting the muffler out and welding in a straight pipe. Anyone got this done already?
I had my muffler cut off and a stright pipe welded in place of it. It sounds good up until about 2500 rpm's then it sounds like an indy car, a very LOUD indy car. I'm thinking of putting on an exhaust tip and see if I can tone down the tinny sound. I haven't noticed any drop in low end torque. I pull a 12,000lb 5th wheel and it pulls just as well without the muffler as it did before. If anything I noticed an increase in throttle response.
But that Catalytic converter is giving you ALOT more of your backpressure then that muffler could ever give. If you remove it, you *will* lose some low end then. But you'll also pick up some of the higher end to compensate. Though..the 6.8 needs that low end to be what it truly needs to be.
I had my muffler removed and replaced with a piece of pipe with the stock tailpipe , it sounds good to me at low rpm's but stand on it . it barks , barks loud .... I guess if I had to do over I wouldn't ... That's just me .... Fred
I was getting my trailer unloaded yesterday in San Angelo, TX, and another F350 V10 pulled in to the place I was at. It sounded killer, and I noticed these HUGE exhaust tips hanging out behind the duals. I got to talking to the driver, and he said he was running a Full Boar Performance (almost identical to a Flowmaster 40 series) single in/dual out muffler, and his tips were made from the top 18 inches of a big truck exhaust stack. Tips were about 6 or 7 inches in diameter. Truck had a deep rumble at idle. I left before I got to hear it under a load, but he did rev it up a few times, and it sounded great!. I am now searching for a couple of used chrome Peterbuilt stacks.
I ran a striaght pipe through the cat, so visible inspection there is a cat but has a straight flow. I put a gibson stainless cat back on it. It sounds good and loud, but definitely not a V-8 sound. But boy when I get on it.................I like it personally! Better throttle response for sure. I love to be in traffic and some guy with a ricer and a loud stereo pull up next to my truck. My exhaust is usually at his window level. I will punch it and give him a blast of V-10 sound right in his window. It's fun!
