I have a 1995 explorer 4x4 it seems to have premature ABS activation while stopping at speeds under 10 mph. I know the difference between a bad rotor and know this is not the case. i do not have any dash indications and fluid, pads, calipers and rotors are ok. Ive had the brakes checked but and have been told its wheel sensors that need to be replaced. the only way i can get it to stop is disconnect the front wheel sensor wich disables the ABS system completely. Am i the only one with this problem and is changing the sensors a big job?
Risky it sounds to me that you are loosing input from one of the sensors at low speeds. Dont be too quick in changing your sensors. I have experienced this problem on numerous types of Ford vehicles. If you check on your font brakes(around the axle) you will see a ring with square teeth on it(exciter ring). Check these rings for any type of cracks or chips. Cracks usually appear between the teeth and that is the culprit. The new part costs about $11 but you will probably want a shop to install it for you. Good Luck!
The ABS sensor usually does't go bad, but a build up of metallic particles from the brake pads wearing attract to the magantized speed sensor.
I think the sensor is held into place with a 8mm head bolt. Turn the wheels to look behind the backing plate and/or follow the wire to the sensor. Unbolt and wipe off the particles with a rag. Be careful not to get any metal slivers in your fingers.
Hi, I have a 1995 Ford Explorer Sport that is experiencing the same problem. When I have almost come to a complete stop in the vehicle, the pedal goes to mush and I can hear the ABS pump. I have removed my left front abs sensor and cleaned it. This helped somewhat, but the problem still occurs just not as frequently. My left front wheel bearing is close to being ready for replacement. Does anyone think that replacing the wheel bearing may fix the problem? And is there anyway to check the sensors before throwin out 100 bucks for the new wheel bearing?
How can you tell if a wheel bearing is going? I have had 4 new tires on and replaced my right upper and lower ball joints.,And they had to put cambers in to fix my alignment..I also put 4 new shocks in about 3 months ago..Now when i go over bumps i hear something else bouncing around.Not a metal sound but a base like sound.I can only hear it with my windows up..Thanx
So, have any of you guys found a fix for this? I am having the same problem with my new 97 and want the dealer to fix it before the 30 day warranty is up.
if you have a bad wheel bearing .... you can spin the wheel and hear it and also see the wheel spin awkward... you can also raise one side and place a jack under the control arm and relieve the pressure and move the wheel by grabbing on the top and bottom of the wheel and moving by pushing and pulling on it .. if there is play you should be able to feel it .. Hope this helps
