I have an '80 F250 4x4 with, I believe, Dana 44 front diff that's leaking quite nicely. I don't really have the time, or the money, to tear the sucker completely apart, and I only probably put 1000 miles a year on the truck - hauling gravel, bark dust, yard debris, etc.., so I'm considering just buying a bottle of stop-leak, and calling it good.
I realize this isn't the best solution, but is it really going to be terribly harmful, with this lightly used a vehicle? Any brand suggestions? Any other option that I'm missing?? Anyone know where I can find the guy who decided building a diff without covers was a good idea?
Where is it leaking? If it's leaking out one of the seals, live with it. If it's leaking around the cover, pull it clean it up and put it back together with black or orange RTV; it's a 20 minute job.
erm, it's leaking around the cover, but the Dana 44 doesn't have a (easily) removable cover - it's integrated with the ball joints. Am I missing an obvious easy solution? Can I loosen the cover enough to apply a new RTV gasket seal, without completely removing it?
I don't see any other way of fixing it other than tearing it down. Make sure your axle vent tube is clear, maby there is something blocking it that has led to this problem.
