We just bought a used in-line 6 engine for our 1995 F-150 (original engine had almost 400,000 miles on it). The 'new' engine has a tapping sound to it. It is a constant sound - does not get better or worse when driving. It is a metal sound. Both the parts yard that sold us the engine and the mechanic who installed it said that it sounded like a rocker arm and that it wouldn't cause any problems. Has anyone experienced similar problem? Is there a solution short of getting another engine? Can truck run like this without causing any additional problems?
I would say you have a stuck valve lifter. Sometimes they come unstuck on their own, like within a month. You could try experimenting with different things.
Do an engine flush when you change the oil. Try different oil additives.
I doubt if you'll damage anything in the short run, but if it doesn't stop after a month, have it fixed.
The junk yard mentioned that it could be a valve or lifter, also. Do you think that using a thicker oil (20w50) would help? It doesn't seem to affect the performance.
but a diesel rated oil which is also for gas engines has more addittives than any other oil out there try some shell rotella and it will clean your engine up real nice and ask anyone who uses rotella in their gas engines and ask how many miles they have on them it is common that engines run with rotella last almost forever just do a search here or go to rotella.com and look at the sucess stories
I think a lighter oil has a better chance of dislodging the crud that is making the lifter stick. I had 10W30 in my Grand Prix when the lifter finally came back to life.
Even though these engines have hydraulic lifters, they are adjustable. Perhaps, you just need to remove the valve cover and go through the adjustment procedure in the book. My 240, which is a short stroke 300, developed a ticking noise. I adjusted the valves and that ended the noise.
mine sounds like diesel were do I find that oil?just changed the oil filter to motor craft
you know bad valve The guy who owned it went the cheapest way allways.thinking about the adapter, only paid 4 REALLY DON'T WANT TO CHANGE CAM JUST YET
