My transmission on my 92 f150 2wd has been recently making a tapping sound or a nocking sound whenever I accelerate, at any speed(highway and road)
Took it to a tranny shop, got oil changed, they said that nothing seems wrong. They said it's not worth it to go in and look for a problem, cause most likely, there will be more than one problem, and cost to much to fix it.
I can hear a clicking sound whenever i drive it. The sounds are bouncing of things like fences or house, thats how i can hear the engine clicking sounds. Could it be the lifters or valves.
Does the ticking sound happen when you're not moving?
Also visit http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13 and learn to pull your engine codes for free. it will take a few times to get used to counting the blinks. The EEC-IV system Ford uses is pretty good!
91 octane resists ping better than 87. it cost more but most vehicles don't need it. Its a cheap check to see if its ping or not.
As Quicklook2 mentioned, it could be a cracked or warped exhaust manifold. Thats one of the more common repairs on the 302 & 351 engines.
Look at your running engine when its real dark. If you see even the slightest flash that would likely be a spark that didn't stay in the wires = time to replace at least that wire.
Sounds like a problem I'm still having, I'll bet its your passengerside exhaust manifold is warped and needs replaced, and your gasket is getting bad. This is no cure with a new exhaust manifold, I speak first hand with this problem. I went to Autozone and have purchased some Seal 4 good manifold gaskets that are reusable and aluminum. I'll let you know if this works, mine only ticks under acceleration, actually you can hear it then, yours is leaking at all times also, its just you can't hear it until you accelerate. If you have noises in your E40D tranny, It's probley up for a rebuild, mine went at 160,000 and cost 1,500.00 with all heavy duty high performance parts along with a stall. If you plan on keeping the truck get this fixed,if not save your cash. Oh yeah get another opinion on your tranny, I had some yum yum head tell me my computer was shot and the truck had low voltage, I laughed at him, the truck could barely get up the hill when I left his shop, it was slipping so bad and made some god awful noises. Get a second opinion most mechanics at these shops really do not have any Idea what they are talking about, they motivate me to keep on using this website for knowledge and do it yourself mechanics. Hope this helps.
Well, you are saying that mine ticks all the time but it only ticks when I am accelerating.
I do want to keep my truck, I love it also. But, I cant stand when it is performing badly, and i dont know what the problem is.
You seem to have the same symptomes as I do, and you suspect it to be the passenger side exhaust manifold, and the gasket needing replacement. Can i just buy some new headers for it, and replace both sides?
Code reader for this era truck is about $30 and available at your local parts store, walmart, online.... Lots of choices. I'm cheap so I learned to count.
Definite pull your codes if the trucks not running right. Keep in mind that vacuum and fuel pressure are not directly monitored, so if you have the means have them checked.
Go ahead and try the higher octane fuel, if the noise is significantly reduced then its probably ping.
Yes autozone stocks the Actron model for $25 at my store. They may pull your codes for free if you ask them. Not all stores can pull the pre-96 ford codes for free though.
To check the vacuum, you'll need a vacuum gauge, anywhere up to $50 if its got a vacuum pump with it.
To check the fuel pressure you need a fuel pressure gauge. This is about $50 too.
Autozone may check both of these for you if its a slower day. It dont hurt to ask before you shell out $$$ in my opinion.
