I got a question here, I know a guy that has a close to mint 71' LTD with a 429 P.I. that he is wanting to sell, wife says it has to go. Its an old ATF car and this guy used to work for them so somehow he has kept it. Anything special about P.I.'s? Any good info on them? I know that thing registers 160 on the speedo heh I just wonder if it'll do it, but thats another story.
Police intercepter. ..... I do believe it's the same thing as a 429 cobra jet......... except it has open chamber heads ...... which means a touch less compression.
To be sure Thunderguns, look on the heads just under the lip of the valve cover for a part number and post 'em here. Somebody will tell you what they are. The letters you are looking for will be something like D0OE or D0VE. Be sure to check both sides for matching numbers also. When dealing with these older vehicles you never can tell when somebody has been switching parts around thru the years. Good Luck.
I have a set of 429 PI heads and the casting number is d20e-ab.
I've been told that the size of the valves are the same as the CJ but I'm not sure. I think the CJ intake is 2.25 and the PI is 2.19. The combustion chamber is bigger on the PI than the CJ (a little less compression). The exhaust port is smaller and this produces more low and mid range torque. These are very good heads.
If the car is indeed a true police car it is worth more complete than the motor is worth. There are people that collect and restore them that are paying some good money for them.
i just got a 1970 ltd with a 429 in it from a neighbor and it had the original owners manual in it. it has a spec list in the back and lists the 429 pi as having 4.13x3.98 bore and stroke and 10.5:1 pistons...
Actual "PI" 385 series motors came out in '72. Sooo, if it is a true early 385 series "PI" motor, then the head should be cast D2OE-AA, maybe, possibly, a D2OE-AB. I alway's thought the "PI's" were "FE" motors through '71, are you sure it's not a 428??? BTW the 385 series "PI" motors heads had 88cc chambers.
I have read that 429PI engines in 1970/71 were CJ's(DOOE-R heads), given that PI heads did not exist until /72. The car is of value if is complete and original. 429PI's were better suited to street driving than the earlier higher compression 429's, esp the CJ's.
