Does anyone know where to find a 5/8 press fit nipple for the thermostat bypass on the front of a 352 intake. All I am getting from auto parts dealers is blank stares. They want me to tap the hole and use a threaded one. That is not where I am headed with this engine. I have done some surfing but to no avail. I know that I could find it on my own eventually but why not harness the power of the FORD team?!?
My Eddelbrock RPM came with a hole where that nipple was supposed to be. It was a Saturday and I was dying to get the thing running. Every Auto Part Store in town looked at me like I was crazy. I ran by Ace Hardware and I purchased a brass pipe with threads on both ends and a tap. I cut the pipe down and filed off the burrs and wrapped it with teflon tape. It worked perfectly and I did not have to drill the whole in the Intake. Just tapped it out.
If you need to know the exact size I used, I can go look at the tap for you.
3/8 PIPE thread {NPT} is the size you need. Plumbing pipe is measured by inside diameter and the outside diameter of brass or iron plumbing pipe just happens to be 5/8, hence the perfect fit for an automotive hose nipple.
I've done the pipe fix on several FE intakes and it works perfectly but is not original.
The Ford base part number for the press in nipple you seek is 8555. DOOZ-8555-A or maybe C5AZ-8555-A sticks in my head as the old Ford part # . Been too long to remember for sure. I'll have to check the OLD microfilm to be sure! Probably discontinued eons ago from Ford!
Good luck!
The radiator shop sounds like a good lead. Tried 1/2' cooper pipe but it would have to be turned down. It is 5/8" O.D.(0.625), but the hole in the intake is about 0.617. Too much to hammer in. Will copper be okay or will it cause the steel around it to rust and leak. Also, what kind of sealer should be used?
By the wat, I admire the resoucefullness of going to the hardware store and getting the thing running. After all, they are made to drive!
Possibly a press in style nipple from a small block Ford water pump would work and look nearly stock. Maybe from the "Help" line of parts from the auto parts stores would have these nipples? The Ford part basic 8555 is a water pump nipple. Take one out of an old small block water pump?
Hey bobcat, you are right on with that part number, but it is no longer available per the dealer I checked with. I am still working on getting one. I have a couple of old water pumps but don't know how good the will be or how long they will last. It's a pain to replace once the engine is put back together. I wonder if places that rebuild water pumps would sell me one. Think I will look into that.
