plastic wheel well trim

Has anyone removed the plastic trim around the wheel wells? Is it painted underneath? I thought of this when I saw a 2002 Blackwood on a car lot the other day. There was a line of scrathes all along the fender where the plastic rubs against the body paint. Maybe this thing would look better without the plastic altogehter....

if its like the 03's there will be 12 holes in the fender where the mouldings clip into the fenders
