I can't tell you about the Ranger.... But my "nice" car (Integra) just got treated to a Optima "Red Top" 910CCA. I didn't have to change a thing. It slid right in place of the dead one. The down side is the cost, and it seemed to be heavier. Hope this helps.
Put in an Optima Redtop on my 2002 Ranger XLT. Had to modify the battery tray a bit since it wouldn't fit in (too long). You may also need to get some aftermarket battery hold downs if the OEM battery is wider than the Optima. I created a shim for my OEM hold down to secure the new battery in place.
I had one in a company truck. One day it cranked fine. Five minutes later after a stop, it was totally dead. Even the radio wouldn't work. I crossed it off my must have list.
They've faired well in battery tests & are available from my local MotorCraft parts distributor at competitive prices & carry 2-3 year non prorated replacement & up to 8 year prorated.
So don't write em off your get list.
94 Taurus origional equipt. one was changed out for another MotorCraft in 2000, I still have the old one & use it for powering 12volt things aound the house. The replacement is still in the Taurus & running strong.
My 99 Ranger still has the origional battery in it & is doing well.
Both the Taurus & Ranger are LOADED with electrical STUFF, that gets regular use & both sit outside year round, so they aren't babied. Used but not abused.
I only use tripple distilled DI water in all my batteries, keep them topped off, clean & get 6-10 years out of them.
MotorCraft has worked real good & lasted a long time for me, over the past 25 years, so I abide by what the locals say around here, "You don't fix what aint broke"!!!! lol
My 98 Mazda B4000 still has the original Motorcraft battery in it. Only once would it not start, and that was on a cold morning after sitting doing nothing for several days.
I would not consider it because they don’t seem to offer a group 58 or 65 which is what the battery trays in our trucks were designed to accept. Why rig something when you can spend far less on a good replacement battery and just drop it right in.
