My wife's 97 EB Expy (5.4L, 4x4, 106K) has a small leak at the passenger axle seal which is slowly soaking the inner rear brake pad with gear oil and causing a squeaking noise upon braking.
Has anyone ever changed this seal? How hard is it?
I'm sure I've probably got to pull the diff. cover and remove the axle, but I was looking for any strange things while replacing this seal that anyone might have encountered while doing this that might save me some time?
Cobra-Master, I have been down this avenue just recently on my 98 Expy w/ 112K miles.. Noticed last fall heavy weight oil (gear lube) forming on the inside of my rr rim. Took it to a local shop and they installed a new rear axle seal ($130) and sent me on my way. Did not seal it as the fluid began to form on the inside of the rim the next day. Took it back and they reinstalled another seal, did not seal it. Found another local shop and he gave me a pretty comfy feeling he knew of the issue and the fix. I thought great here we go, new axle, new bearing and new seal. Not the case. They pulled the axle and found that the axle bearing had .010" of play in, which sounded excessive. He replaced the bearing and seal (Ford replacement seal) and the issue has been resolved. Cost $279. Hope this helps. I did not have squeaking noise.
I had the same issue (minus the squeaking) on the same side of mine as well. Took it to the dealer since it was still under warranty and they did the job. Yes they drained and filled the differential but neglected to put the extra additive when they filled it and I ended back in the dealer's shop demanding they replace the clutch packs that went bad. Somehow they got it under the extended warranty (even though I knew it was their fault) and after a brief discussion the paid the $100 deductible.
Mine used approx. 2.5 Qts. and The Right Stuff is used to reseal the differential. I had a hard time getting the C clip off of the axles. I had to use a prybar to get it to clear and release the axle. Also the seals have a interior spring that holds the lips of the seal to the axle shaft. I have had the spring pop of as a result of driving it in. Also when reinstalling the axle if you rest the weight of the axle on the seal before it is seated the spring can slip off. I had to redo one so I saved, strain and reused the almost new lube.
