Question Pros/Cons 6.9L

I have recently inquired to purchase an 85 f350 crew cab dually with the 6.9L diesel with "I think" a 5 spd. Does anyone have any good or bad experiences or tendencies I should know about this motor before commiting myself to the agreement? Or just any info you have about them would be good. The body seem putty free, straight and had little rust and the truck was $3000. I will plan on using it as tow vehicle. Didn't look at miles, probably should have though
Thanks
Scott

I went and looked at the truck again and the odometer read ~79,000 miles, but it was only a 5-digit read off, so it could very well be 179,000....or 279,000. Also, at a second look, the truck was an 86, not an 85 and a 4spd, not a 5spd. The bed was a bit more rotted out and beat up(it's pretty bad) than I originally thought but from the cab forward the body was decent and rust free. I has good tires on it. Worth $3K?

Sounds like top dollar to me. If he could prove that was actual mileage and it doesn't drink oil, then it's probably a good truck.

Bring cash and get it for 2,000-2250. There are better trucks around at that price, just takes a little while to find them.

I've never looked into diesel trucks before, and have really considered it lately b/c i need a new truck to haul my toys around with and I like my company truck a lot, but its a powerstroke which I've heard is a lot different. I really only need it for hauling on the weekends to mud runs and demo derbies....is the 6.9L a good hauling motor?

I grew up on a 6.9 (kinda) and now have one of my own, quite happy with it.

I'm going to go ahead and start a fight. Take that 6.9L out and put in a 94-98.5 Dodge 5.9L Cummins in there.

That's probably a good idea- but the original plan was to find a cheap haulin vehicle- I only need it once a week for about 30 miles. Thanks for the suggestion though. I just came from my friends and he told me to get it and put a BBC in. I wanted to hit him, but refrained...haha. You could've suggested worse Manitoulin.

those cummins aint got nothin that our old IDI's dont, besides there is just somthing not right about cobbing a cummins in place of an IDI.thats like people shoving small block chevys into old ford roadsters and such,i cant stand that!
dont get me wrong, cummins makes a hell of a engine, work with them all the time, but i still will never trade my IDI for one.

Alright I have both a 6.9 in a 84 F-150 4X4 and am putting a 5.9 Cummins in my 86 F-350 4X4 and I wouldnt trade anything in the world for my Cummins. I would like to find a truck something like you are looking at with a good body and a bad motor and build the IDI for some serious HP! I'm a HP junky and really never been a big Ford diesel fan. The way you are describing it I wouldnt give him $3000 for the truck, I bought the crewcab that 6.9 came out of for parts for $600 and it was a F-350 4X4, but the body was pretty shot!

I dont think Im gonna go with the 86 as I may have found a better deal- 89 F250 ext cab long bed(not dually) body is definitely better and runs well, with 119,000 miles for sure. This truck has a 7.3L(non turbo). I made an offer of 1100 and he is considering it(he is college bound and no longer needs it), what do ya'll think?
