The butteryfly valve (or butterfly plate) is the flap that is inside of the TB. When the throttle is engaged/disengaged, it opens/closes the butterfly valve, allowing varying amounts of air into the upper intake which then gets distributed amongst the cylinders. It's the red thing with a black stripe in this pic:

Not to sure what would happen, but one of two things I am pretty sure of: 1) it would not run at all, or 2) it would be at WOT all the time.

If you look down the barrel of the TB almost were the TB and manifold meet you should see a brass "plate". This is the butterfly valve. It regulates how much air is comming in. Step on the gas and it will open wider.

I assume this is on a 94 Ranger with EFI? (based on your user name)

Just a screen? I'm confused. Are you talking about the TB or the MAF housing?

In this pic of my 4.0L Upper Intake Assembly, the TB is the closest thing to you.

If you were missing the TP you would be at WOT all the time, can you take a pic of the part your talking about.

WOT= wide open throttle. If you know where the air filter goes them follow the black tub past MAF= mass air flow sensor to where is stops a the Engine there is a hose clamp there loseing it and remove the black hose this hose is about 2" around,What you see is the TB= throttle body look inside and you should see the butterfly plate.Hope this helps.

Never heard of a TB without one. That doesn't mean some place like Ford, wouldn't come up with something crazy like that.
