I'm sure this is an old topic, but being new to this forum, I need help. I just bought a 26' class c motor home with the V10. The owner represented the MPG at 9-11. Driving it to Tennesse from Texas I got 7.2- 7.5.
About 2/3 the way home I replaced the air filter with a K&N, which got me to 8.0. Still a dissapointment. Any suggestions on modifactions or changes that will improve the MPG. The engine has 61K miles and runs well with good power.
I get 11.3 with an F350 unloaded. I just don't feel the need to check it when I'm towing. But, it would probably be around 8 or 9 MPG.
Welcome to FTE and the world of the V10!
Thanks for your honest reply. I have found that the last oil change was 20w-50. The manual calls for 5W-30. Do you think the 5W-30 in synthetic might make a difference?

No, changeing oil will not improve your MPG. I have a 2003 F-250 and I average about 11 mpg. You have to figure that your motor home, is going to experience more wind resistance than a normal V-10 truck and it is heavier also. So I think you are right on par getting about 8 gallons. That is about what I get when I tow my boat.
Get a big, long iron bar with a hook on the end. Creep up behind a semi, and latch on like a remora on a shark. He'll never even know you are there. Outstanding mileage!
Yes changing weight will change your milage. I experienced this first hand with my first V10. I started with 5-30 an averaged 14 mpg unloaded and switched to heavier 10-30 and lost 3 mpg! I thought the heavier oil would help, but after seeing the gas prices rise i went back to 5-30 an change every 3k miles. YES IT WILL CHANGE YOUR MILAGE!
Thanks for the debate on the oil weight vs/ mpg. I will be changing oil from 20-50 to 5-30 soon. Hopefully I ll have a trip in the next couple of weeks. I will post my results.

Get your oil changed ASAP, that thick oil can ruin your motor. The new gen engines are built to very tight tolerances to keep emissions down. Thick oil will not reach into all the places oil needs to go. There's been a couple people here who have had motors go bad and they had Rotella 15W-40 or something similar in the crankcase. 5W-30, 5W-20 or even 10W-30 is OK. And thicker oil will hurt your gas mileage, not to the extent you are hoping for, but it will make a difference, but only .5 mpg or so, if at all. Try Amsoil, or Royal Purple and you may get a small mpg increase. I have a std E-350 with the V-10, I get 12-14 mpg, when towing my TT, I get 7-9, about what you're getting. Which is about right for the load, the frontal mass and the engine/tranny/rear-end combo. Ken
use 87, that is what Ford requires. Using a higher octane can actually hurt you engine because the higher the octane the hotter it burns, you can start to leave carbon deposits on your valves.
