00 4.0 starting problem

I have a 2000 Ranger, 2x4, 4.0 with 115000 miles on it. It , intermittently, doesn't want to start. If i hold the gas pedal to the floor, it will start, but then it won't idle unless i keep it revved up. After a few minutes , it idles fine, Any ideas where to start trouble shooting? Thanks Ross.

Welcome to FTE!

Do you notice it after a cold start, or after it warms up, or does it do it whenever? Any other symptoms?

Holding the pedal to the floor shuts off the fuel injectors during a crank condition. So maybe your motor is flooding out somehow?

It should start without any touching of the throttle pedal. In fact, the pedal is never to be touched when starting a Ford fuel-injected vehicle. Like I said, maybe too much fuel is being dumped into the cylinders causing a flooded condition. If that is the case, some leakdown of fuel (bad fuel injector?) into the cylinder(s) could be occurung while the truck sits for a prolonged period.

Next time it happens, try turning the ignition switch on and off several times. This "cycling" of the switch will help "normalize" the fuel pressure. Then w/o touching the pedal, see if it starts normally.

My dad's 2000 4.0L does the same thing, mostly in winter. It wanted to do it once this spring, but I replaced the TPS, (Throttle Positioning Sensor), and it hasn't done it since. Maybe you should check that. I hear that alot of the newer 4.0L's do this. I have no idea what it is, but once it does start up and run, it's unstoppable ...

Hope this helps.
