My sister has a '96 Explorer Sport. She bought it used year 1/2 ago. The check engine light came on a while ago. she had it checked and 1st it said that gas cap was not on all the way, (crazy) so she tightened, went off. Then it came on again, It said that EGR valve was bad,I replaced it for her. Then it didn't even go off. So she had it checked again and they said it was the EGR sensor, but then we had it checked just the other day and they said it was the EGR Valve again, she is getting upset not knowing what it really is Has anyone had this problem on their Explorer. It has about 130,000 miles on it.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Jun-02 AT 12:56 PM (EST)]What error codes are you getting? if it's p0401 or 402 replacing the DPFE (d? Pressure Feedback Egr Sensor) should fix it, they run about $75 or so. Make sure you get the part number off becasue there are 2 types of these.
The DPFE is under the IAC, it's maybe a 3 by 3 inch box with 2 hoses running down behind the EGR.
This fixed my check engine light on my 96 XLT
Did you reset the codes after you replaced the EGR? If not, disconnect the batter for like 20-30 mins. the Light should be off,,if it comes back on, check codes again.
I've got the same problem on the same truck! I replaced EGR vacuum solenoid and EGR position sensor, but light still comes on.
Also, where is your EGR located? Mine's on the back of the intake (next to firewall). The lower mounting bolt is tucked back in a little hollow, impossible to get to! How did you change it?
I have a 99 Ford Explorer XLT, and the same thing happens. My check engine light has been on for about 3 weeks. know the truck will not stay running. it idles down and cuts off. i've made sure that the gas cap is on. please help.
