hey i have an 88 ranger. it has the 2.3l four banger with a 5spd.
i was planning on putting a 302 in it and i was wondering what would need to be done and what kind of problems i might run into?
also the 302 plan's not set in stone so i was curious what other swaps people do with this gen of rangers.
Ranger R, Advanced Adapters has everything you need for a 302 or 351 swap. They have a manual available that details the entire swap. I think they recommend a 2 inch body lift for clearance for the valve covers. If you don't want the body lift you'll have to modify the heater box on the passenger side firewall. Remember a 351 is taller then a 302 so you will need more clearance to make it work.
im not the handyest guy in the world but my nabor has told me that he'll help me out for the swap. hes a real handy guy to have around im know he can fab up some mounts plus i know he's done countless swaps =P
If you make motor mounts yourself and are pretty handy you can do the swap for far less than 2500. $500 canadian would be pretty reasonable to me.
thats only if you don't rebuild the motor, and you don't upgrade the rear diff. You'll still be set back by headers ($120) motor mounts ($60) and a tranny ($200) my prices are in USD.
I was only counting the cost of swap parts, like mounts & headers etc., not the engine & tranny. Also, I've read that Crown Vic motor mounts are pretty close to what you need, a Crown Vic rad should also work, Crown Vic oil pan will fit. Hmm, maybe I should up my $$ estimate, as you'll need to upgrade the 7.5" rear end to an 8.8" at some point if you put any kind of power to it. I was looking a couple years at this swap to drop a 351 in my Ranger, but I ended up needing the 351 in my F150 instead.
I put a 302 in my '86 Bronco II which had a 2.9L originally. I used an AOD with the Advance Adapters transfer case adapter. Let me know if you have questions or want to see pictures.
