kingpin spindle removal

been searchin through threads but was looking to bring it up again. how do i get the kingpins out. am i better off taking the whole 9 yards to the shop to have it swapped to the drop axle? i figure i will probaly have to get new kingpins, and i kinda messed up the end of the arm that goes through the spindle to the tierod. i still cant get it out. i figured i would have to remove it to get the kingpin out, but i cant. i need to get some torches yet. i am tired of hitting it with a BFH. i will probaly just have to get a set of spindles at the boneyard if i mess em up anymore.

After removing the pin with the nut on it that holds the kingpin at half shaft... turn the axle over and tap out the kingpin.

You will need new kingpins with the dropped axle... cost me $35 to have the new bushings line reamed. Cost 10 to have races pressed in while they were at it... could get pricey if you let the machine shop do it.

I'd go easy with that hammer... replacement parts are high. best himmelberg

My two cents for what it's worth

I'm getting ready to do the king pins on my 51 so I'll see if this works for me on a Ford but the last set I did was on a friends 58 C___y Apache and after much therapy with a BDH I took an air chisel to em with a blunted punch end. Not sure if hours of therapy had loosened them up or if I'd just finally given the PB Blaster a chance to do it's thing but the short hard jarring of the air chisel moved the pins when much hammering wouldn't! Just a thought and maybe worth a try.

my compressor is pretty small so i probaly couldnt do that, but it is a real good idea. i was thinking of taking a sawzall to the old pin through the spacer/bushing on the top of the axle, then slide it down a bit and do it to the bottom. i am going to have to take it all to the shop i think, but i dont want to have to pay for removeal also. but i go to a shop i have been going to for a while and sometimes they throw in a thing or two and they do good work.
