I'll try to keep this as simple as possible so you guys can make sense of it . . . the more I think about the whole thing the more confused I get.
I have installed electric fans on my truck, using a Bosch relay and a switch so I can turn them off when I go driving through deep water. My trouble, as I was reminded yesterday, is sometimes I'll shut the fan off and forget to turn it back on. I hit about 300 degrees yesterday!
Anyway, what I want to do is install a big bright light in my dash which will illuminate when the fans are OFF so I'll remember to turn them back on. I can't seem to find a way to wire this correctly. All I can make happen is the light comes on when the fans are on . . . can someone help me with this?
Change the switch to one that re-routes the power to the light, instead of just cutting the power off to the fan. I assume you are using a hot wire that is off when the ignition is off.
Okay, now I feel extra stupid for not thinking of that. Thanks man, that will work perfect. I'm going to go pick up a new switch this week. Glad someone's grey matter works.
Another option would be to use your fans relay. You have a normally open and a normally closed lug on it, if it's using the regular cube type automotive relay. Your fan is probably wired through the NO lug. When you supply power to the coil, the contact closes - supplying power to your fan. When you flick the switch and turn off power to the coil, the contact flips over and contacts the NC lug.
It is easier to wire though the switch - just another option...
