Lawnmower Oil Question

At my current location (hope to one day build on a 24 acres site I own) I have a 1/2 acre. I always buy the cheapest (around $225) self-propelled walk-behind lawn mower I can find since I use it to run over anything less than 2 inches around. Usually in 2 or 3 years the wheels are falling off and the self-propelled mechanism is broke or whatever. The engines always run forever. I just try to make sure there is some oil in the crankcase. If so then I am good to go. Whatever oil I have around the house is just fine.
However when I build a home and buy a "real" machine, I will baby that beast like I do my F150.
