You couldnt be more right Oppy. I havent been checking. Is it a requirement to run synthetic in newer trucks? I just run Coastal in my differentials...but I change it out at least twice a year because of water crossings on trips. Is this stuff for your diffs or the tranny? Tranny.....thats some big bucks spent there.
According to Ford (at least for F250/F350 SRW Super Dutys) the Sterling rear diff requires 75W-140 synthetic gear oil. Duallys and F450 with the Dana 80, they say synthetic 75W-90. F550s can use dino.
They also spec dino in the front (Dana) diffs, but I'm going to use syn there as well.
Trannys - manual and auto - require Mercon ATF, syn not required.
I guess I'd recommend checking your owners manual, but you'll never go wrong using synthetics. IMO, this is the application in which syn has clear advantages and is worth the extra cost.
$20 - 25 every few years for differential oil on a $20-30,000 pickup is expensive?
Yea, I know.....but I was making the expense remark regarding my above noted need for much more frequent changes in my vehicle. Every few months or 6 can get expensive IF your talking a gallon or two of synthetic oil with each change.
I know what to use in my vehicle. It happens too often.....like Tuesday when I get back from my weekender trip. I just changed the diff fluid out two weeks or so ago, and here I go again. I play in too much water, but its fun.
The vent does go up pretty far. But most the high water I see is salt water, playing at the beach......even a little bit of that stuff inside those gears has just gotta be scary. So like you pointed out ealier..... .....its cheaper to replace the fluids than replace the epuipment. I do appreciate the thought anyways.
just use the mobil1 gear oil. For the interval, I wouldn't use anything else. The supertech is not a bad oil for the crankcase if you change it every 3k miles, but for the rear end use the good stuff.
