Hello,
I have a 1994 Explorer that recently I have been noticing a stong odor of fuel at different times. It can be at cruise or at idle I can not find any fuel leaking or laying any where.
It deffinently is getting harder to start meaning I have to sometimes crank it longer. Other than that it runs fine. Where should I start my search or is there a cause and effect to look for?
Thank You, Samo
You might want to check the feul sending unit at the top of your gas tank. It might be leaking just enough feul to cause the smell , but not enough to leak down the tank. These have been known to rot out quick in parts of the country where salt is used on the roads in winter. I had this problem and the dealer wanted $400 for the sending unit. You could get one for about $140 elsewhere if this is the problem. Stick your nose near the underside of the truck and if you can smell gas even when the engine is off then maybe it is the unit if you cannot see fuel along the lines anywhere.
Also check your filler tube, the outer portion has been known to dry-rot. I don't know where you live, but here in Arizona this is a problem that is usually found durring our emissions testing. They presurize the tank.
Hi, on another car of mine I had the smell of gas that you are talking about. Turned out to be a fuel injector was leaking fuel out the electrical connector. Worth a look anyway. Good luck.
