Test drove a '99 XLT V6 auto with 82000 miles today. This is a beautiful car in perfect condition, leather, digital climate controls, the works. Only thing (there's always something) is that the shift indicator on the steering column points at the next gear. Meaning that in park, it looks like it's in R. I put in what I thought was drive, but it started rolling back down the hill. Sounds normal, shifts normal.
I asked the guy (dealership) about any warranty remaining on the tranny rebuild; he gave the song & dance about how it wasn't necessarily rebuilt or repaired or replaced, and how some of them are like that when new, or maybe it's just the shift handle. It's priced at $9995 but he came down to $9400 as I was walking out the door.
Do any of y'all believe there is even the slightest chance that this transmission is original? Or if it's a rebuild, care to venture a guess as to the probability that it's good for another 100k or so? Opinions welcome - I won't hold you to it!
That could be as simple as needing an adjustment. Doesn't NECESARILLY mean the tranny's been rebuilt, but it may have been pulled to do some work, like rear main seal or something, and when it was put back in they didn't get the linkage quite right. Happened on my 92 Taurus, I took it back to the mechanic & it was a simple adjustment.
