Silly Light Trick...

OK, I realize that this mod is NOT nearly as cool as suspension lifts, tires, exhausts, etc, but it was VERY easy to do so I thought I'd share it. I used the empty holes on the sides of my F350, where the factory step bars are supposed to mount (I have Westins), to mount some LED running lights. The spacing is perfect, so no drilling is required (I worry about rust). I used the same circuit that I used to run my rear marker lights so they're on whenever the main driving lights are on. I posted some pic's in a new gallery if anyone is interested.

I also posted some photos of the Pilot Brand auxillary back-up lights I just put on. They're stepped back from the bumper and are tucked up pretty far so HOPEFULLY I won't destroy them the next time I back up into a snow bank while plowing. They also mounted without any drilling! I did have to endure the pain of drilling holes in my dash for the switches, but at least those holes won't rust! I've learned a ton from the great folks on this forum so hopefully someone will find this helpful.

Wow! The switch install looks great! Almost OEM-like! What did you use for the labeling?

I select a small range of cells in Microsoft EXCEL and set the background color to Black and the text color set to White. Then I print it out on photo glossy paper, cover it with a piece of clear packing tape on the front, put some double sided tape on the back, and cut it out. I've done this a lot when making labels for things and they hold up very well.

Even though we've got almost identical trucks, I gotta say you've got a NIICE truck!! My truck looks like someone shot a coat of Maalox over it, I haven't washed it in over 2 1/2 months!!

Looks good

Where'd you get the running lights from? Is it a standard clearance light bolt span?

Munkey - Thanks for the kind words. One of the reasons that our trucks are almost identical is that I spent a lot of time looking at the galleries on this site and I loved the look of your Dark Shadow Grey Supercab! I actually downloaded some of your photos so I could print them out and ponder my color choices (I must be getting to be an old fart if I'm downloading and staring at pictures of trucks!). I'm glad some of your photo's show your truck clean - I might have shied away from that color if it looked Dark Maalox Grey!

Burr - I got the lights on line at superbrightleds.com (part # M3-A6, $5.95/each). I've bought three different brands of lights about that size and they all have the same bolt spacing so I think it's pretty standard.

I would be interested to know how you hooked up the side marker lights. I looked at the site, superbrightleds.com and it says that it is self grounding with positive wire attached. On their FAQ page, they say to solder a resistor in line. What did you attach the positive wires to and did you splice 4 in to one, or are all four connected to your source? Thanks. Cool mod, I am going to do that myself.

Hang10 - If you look closely at the pictures on the website http://www.superbrightleds.com/truck_lights.htm, you can see that one of the two mounting holes for the LED light has a metal insert. The bolt that goes through that hole can be used to ground the light. I put a ground wire with a crimp-on connecter under the nut on that bolt and connected the wire to ground. If you scraped the paint off the back of your truck's body panel, the bolt/nut would ground directly - but I'd rather run a ground lead to avoid rust and ensure a good ground connection. I used brass bolts since they blended in with the amber lights better and won't rust.
I ran the ground wire and the postive wire from the trailer hitch connector at the back of my truck. I used these for my rear marker lights as well as for the four LED lights on the side. The postive wire from the LED light comes out the side of the light, so I painted it black, tucked it snugly around lower lip of the body panel and tie-wrapped it to the ground strap (out of site). I did not add any resistors to the lights and they seem to work fine (I didn't see the FAQ). The lights are all wired up in parallel - that is, each LED light connects directly to the postive and ground wires that I ran around the underside of the truck. Make sure all wires are well protected, connections are well sealed and you have proper fuses in place. I could be doing something wrong...but that's what I did.....Good Luck!

Great, understood. where did you get your rear markers? I am thinking of getting those too. I notice there are pre drilled mounting holes for those. Thanks for the information!
