Hello,
I just bought a 1980 F150 with what the previous owner said was a "non-original" engine. The engine looks to me like a 302 (only had a minute or two to look since the truck is a 100 miles away and I had to work.)
Since I'm a total Ford newbie, can someone please tell me where one can locate the SBF casting numbers? I Googled my question, and all I could find were close-up pics of cast#'s. From what I can tell, it looks like the numbers are on the passsenger side of the block just ahead of the bellhousing mount and just above the oilpan rail. Is this correct?
You are correct, sometimes the starter must be removed to see the numbers clearly and completely. Also remember that Ford casting numbers will not exactly pin down down what the engine came from and really just represent a "range" of models it could have been from. If the engine was rebuilt, a mix and match of parts internally could be too. Are you having some problems with the engine or are just curious as to what you have in there?

bobcat- Thanks for the excellent info. Answered my Q with some bonus tidbits in there too!
I've been told that the engine was rebuilt (Although I've heard that line before ) But the engine has been painted fairly recently and runs awesome. My curiousity is stemmed from the fact that I just have to know! If I'm gonna start buying intake, cam and the like, I always like to know what I'm working with. Especially with Fords as there's a lot of varietion. But variety is the spice of life, no?
