The 429 is nothing like the 360/390. The 428, on the otherhand, is a lot like the 360/390. Info on that motor can be found in the "FE" forum.

Just to add to the "you can or can't bore" thread. The "nominal" cylinder wall thickness is just that. What comes into play in real life is core shifting. In other words, as the cast iron block cools, it deforms. That's when "nominal" values go out the window.

That's why you can end up with one FE block that can be bored .080 but another one can't, because the cylinder wall thickness and spacing is not consistent between the cylinders. There was some amount of core shifting and the values are neither consistent or within nominal range.

Of course, such blocks were used because they did fall within nominal values for stock motors with a stock bore. Ford (or any other manufacturer) could have cared less about overboring. I believe you'll find that every manufacturer recommends .030 as the maximum overbore. In other words, be safe.

I re-enforcing what scroob posted, Ford's maximum over size for replacement pistons was .003, not even .030
