What kind of loads do you plan on hauling? I am currently looking at proportional brake controllers. The Towing, Trailers, and Fifth Wheels forum in the Misc. section has some great info on brake controllers. Here's the link to the Proportional Brake Controller Thread

All my trucks were ordered with the towing package. I had to upgrade the flasher in my 1997 F-350, but my 2002 and 2004 trucks were fine. Don't know if this has to do with the newer super duties or the towing package.

if you truck has the towing package you should have a factory plug for a brake controller, so when you buy the controller you can get the plug from them so all you have to do is plug it in under the dash and pug it into the controller, its as simple as that,,now where is that plug you ask, open the panel under your steering wheel(4 big plastic screws, where the fuse box is)all the way to the right of that opening you will see a black plug next to a metal frame with some holes in it, behind the plug and on the other side of the metal frame(thru one of the holes) should be a gray open plug with silver pins in it, thats it.
oh sorry i did not catch that you dont have a factory tow package, take a look anyhow. on the window sticker of my '01 it does not list the tow package but i have the plug for the controller

I believe sometime in the late 90's they come pre-wired. I know the 2000 and up have them wired already....

i have the under dash plug and there is a plug a rear hitch. i will pull tandem axle trailer weighing up to 9000 #. the reason i ask about heavy duty flasher is that i see a couple of fuses? or flasher? in a plastic bag with the plug on an ebay oem kit.

I use a Tekonsha Sentinal controler and it works great. I've used it for 5 or 6 years with no problems. On my 2000 the wiring was behind the computer access plug under the dash. No plug just wires,

I have the Tekonsha Prodigy and love it... It's versatility has worked great with our travel trailer from Anchorage to Orlando.

My 2001 SD came new with 2 relays, 2 fuses, and a wiring harness stuffed in a plastic bag. One relay and fuse is for the electric trailer brake wiring and the other set is for the trailer battery charge cable. They go into one of the electrical junction boxes under the hood.

The fuses do the obvious, while the relays open their respective circuits when the key is off to keep your truck's battery from being drained. The wiring harness mates to the brake controller's harness and then plugs into a cannon plug under the dash. It took me about 45 minutes to have it up & running.

My truck had the tow package (like most all SDs in 2001), so the controller was plug & play. My flasher was also HD and works great.

Does your truck have the round 7 pin trailer plug in the rear? If not, you will have to get one installed.

ok, i was wrong, after doing so research, and finding the trailer tow package in my tool box, after you plug in the controller you do have to put in 2 ,30 amp max fuses in the under hood fuse box #16,#28(the two empty ones) and put in two relays, in the little box right next to the main under hood fuse box
