Found what looks to be a Dana 60 from a 1972 pickup. Is this axle reverse cut and what about the pinion location? Most the reading I have done starts with axles 1976 or later. The question is can this Dana 60 make the convert over to my 1993 bronco? I have to take some measurements and go back and take another look at it; but if anyone can help thank would be great.
I dont think you want this old of an axle. i believe the spring perches are narrower or wider and also that axle would be a drum brakes and a closed knuckle design which isnt the best. I would find one from a 77 1/2 with front disks and open knuckle.
the dana 60 is leaf sprung and your bronco is coil sprung right? are you wanting to put a straight axle under it or only 8 lug? 78-79 dana 44 straight axles use coil springs and have disc brakes and are easy to convert to 8 lug also. dana made a 44 8 lug diffs. If you are talkin bout the rear end any 80-96 holds the rear you need. isnt your bronco equipped with 4 wheel abs? thats a major subject to think about and your speed sensor on the rear too. If you change the front diff you will loose you front abs and without the front abs the rear wont apply either. Dont know what the abs tells the computer if its unplugged i have a 93 bronco 5.0 5speed that i wanted to convert a 9 inch into but then would have no speedo so i bought another 8.8. they do break easy with a 5 speed and a few after market add-ons. just a few things to consider before jumpimg in feet first thats what i was about to do.
The immediate goal is to get a trail sound truck that can handle a slight beating. Spending the last week on jackstands waiting for this weekend to rebuild tie-rods, drag link and axle bushing sucks. So, it looks like coil sprung solid axle is the best choice. Well, I was going to start with a lift but then I found out about the weakness in TTB. So the 60 and 44 are my options. I figure. Find the right axle, rebuild, swap and lift my truck. To answer offroad or highway or both question. It would both to start. I have to get the girl friend another truck before I make this on off-road only.
Using a later model axle can the abs retro fit to one of these or does it have to be diconnected.
Thx
Dave
i think toy can retro fit the rotors but the back plates im not real sure about. watch out on your 60 to get the electical plug un the housing for your abs and speed sensor not sure which years will interchange but when you get the rear just get the plug off the truck too its only 2 wires.
