I have an 87 F250 2wd with a 302FI/4spd reg cab long box. Currently it drives with a busted motor mount and sticking driver's side caliper. I don't put enough miles on it to worry about these right now, however the truck is otherwise mechanically sound. If I were to fix the mount + caliper, do ya'all think that this truck would be physically able to tow a 76' f150 from NC to OH. This journey is nearly 700 miles and includes the lovely mountains in WV. This truck is the only one I can take that I think is capable of the job. The calipers are dual piston, and the rear brakes are sound. Any input is appreciated.
The '93 2WD Reg cab F150 I used to own had a 302 that could barely pull my 3000 lb boat here in the plains. I sure don't envy you going across the mountains with a load. Drive slow (as if you'll have a choice! ) & be safe!
The tow will be by trailer, and the trailer does have electric brakes. This truck is geared fairly low(2500rpms goin 55 in 4th) and has been used for heavy hauling before, but not for distances more than 15 miles, and not by trailer. I guess my biggest concern is the matter of braking
I actually just gave both a once-over today, as the truck blew its top hose. Some how the damn thing got into my alternator fan....go figure.
Thanks
Scott
F250's have good brakes for towing and your trailer's electric brakes will help alot. The main disappointment will be the 302 and the wieght of the towed truck + trailer. You can do it, but I wouldn't go making a habit of it.
I see you have other much more capable towing trucks in your signature. Any reason why you are not planning to use one of them?
I agree with everyone else. F-250s have good brakes and you have a long wheel base and a granny 4 speed for the downhills. The main thing is the 302 pulling 6200+ pounds up and down mountains. A lot of weight for a little V-8 motor, especially since the 76 truck will be like a 6x6 piece of plywood going down the road and a sail from sidewinds. Drive slow, especially downhill.
I'd worry about that sticking caliper more than anything. If it decides to drag, the brakes on that wheel will fade and not be effective. The truck will then pull if you hit the brakes, and if you hit them hard enough, it could be a real problem.
As for my other trucks- the other 87 isn't street legal and my 76 is too tall for hauling(this truck is getting the body of the 76 Im going to fetch). The f350 is a company truck and I can't drive it for "leisure." The newer f150 is obviously incapable. Thanks for everyone's help
I've been towing my 4500# travel trailer with my E150 van with a 302 motor. Its OK on flat land with no wind and hills. However on my last trip back from Cape Hatteras N.C. I was Bucking a 20 MPH headwind and was lucky to go 55 mph. Not to mention the Temp guage was pegged out Air conditioning bogged it down even further.Good luck in WVA. I would not even attempt that state with my rig.
