Have an 89 f250, 7.3l Internation Navistar engine with 205,000 miles. Runs like a top. Problem is the initial start. The engine behaves like it does not get fuel enough to start. Once running, I have no problem. Filter is new, lines have no leaks, injector pump appears to be working in fact fuel pumps through the filter well. What can I do to get the fuel from the talk to the engine--after so many miles, would the injector pump not be able to pull fuel adequately from tank?
The problem is not the fuel, but lack of heat in the chamber. You probaly have a few bad glow plugs. The way to check them is unplug all the glow plugs, using a test light, hook up the clip to the positive side (yes positive side), of the battery, Touch each one of the glow plugs at the spade, if the light tester lights the plug is good if it does not the glow plug is bad.
Also how long is your wait to start on? When cold it should be on about 5 to 8 seconds, if it is not staying on this long you may have a bad control unit or a bad temp sending unit.
Good post on the glow plugs Dave so I'll also tell about the transfer pump mounted on the engine. The transfer pump looks just like a mechanical fuel pump mounted to the timimg cover. It's job is to move the fuel from the tank to the injector pump.I too don't think the cold start problem is fuel delivery, but for about $30.00,you can replace the transfer pump just for sanity.

Dave, I did indeed find 2 glow plugs that needed to be replaced. I just did this this morning, so tomorrow morning will be the test to see if the problem has been fixed.
Thanks so much for the help!!
There is one other thing to check, that might not make it start easy. On the injector pump you will find two wires conected, one is the shut off silonoid the other is the cold timing advance. When the engine is cold and you first start it, both wires should be hot. Once the engine reaches running temp the cold advance will shut off. This is why when you start the 6.9 and 7.3 motors they rattle very load when cold.
Also is the glow plug control unit ok, does it light up the plugs long enough?
After replacing the glow plugs yesterday, I started the truck for the first time this morning. The problem is fixed!!!!
While I was tinkering, I did indeed check the connections to the injector pump. They were fine and everything looked in order.
It was the glow plugs apparantly.
Thank you so much for your help!! You are a peach.
