My daily driver is a 97 F-250 Crew Cab Powerstroke that I recently did a Dana 60 Axle swap and am swapping an 80 in the rear, as soon as my Franklin tree replenishes itself. It came factory with the TTB, fortunately it no longer resides there. I had some issues with my steering box popping and leaking fluid when the engine wasn't running, with the old axle in place. When I was setting my toe on the new axle, it sprayed fluid all over the pitman arm and new differential. That was with the engine cold and not running. I have tightened my hydraulic hoses and they still leak. It no longer pops or cracks when I run through the radius of the box; backing a trailer up, 3 point turn-around or anything that curtails turning the steering wheel without any forward motion. My front-end is brand new, from the ground to the dropped pitman arm. All of my geometry looks good and the truck drives like a cadillac. The problem that I am experiencing is what I believe is bump-steer. I feel it in the steering wheel on little bumps and pot-holes. Can the steering box be rebuilt? Where is this slack coming from. I have adjusted the nut on top of the box to no avail. Can anyone help me keep this truck steering better?
What did you use to locate the front axle? Just springs or a track bar too? If the track bar and drag link are not perfectly in line with each other, you will get the bump steer. IF it feels like something is clanking, then there is another issue.
The fluid may have come out of the resiviour. If its leaking at the hoses, then I don't know what to say.
I used leafs to locate the axle along with the panhard bar. With the 6-inch suspension lift, the panhard would not reach factory brakets, so I fabbed one out of some hi-test two inch strap. I felt that this would alow for a compromise between articulation and anti-latteral movement of the front axle. I may need to go back to the drawing board. Nothing is clanking however and I do not feel that the fluid is coming out of the reservoir, though I haven't confirmed it yet. I have heard alot of good propoganda for AGR pumps and am leaning towards purchasing one of those and then replacing hoses and going from there until I can eliminate every possibility.
