Going from 3.73 to 4.10 gear ratio. Much difference?

I have a 2004 F250 CC 2wd V10 with 3.73's in the rear end. The truck pulls my 5500# boat well here in flat Florida, but appears sluggish (loaded or unloaded) especially in 2nd and 3rd gear. 1st, 4th, and even overdrive appear to have more torque. I have always wondered why ford does not offer the 4.10 ratio with the V10.

I travel a mix of highway and city and wonder if going to the 4.10 gear will provide a little more pulling power and acceleration while keeping the rpm's and gas mileage respectable on the highway. I have considered the 4.30, but for my application (i.e. only pull on the weekends) this may be too much gear.

Will I notice a difference and is it worth it? Anyone done this? Thanks for the advice.

Rick

I've got 4.10s in my truck, and from what I have read, there isnt much difference at all as far as mileage is concerned, but a noticable difference in the towing power. I am regularly pulling a 7000# 40' gooseneck flatbed with anywhere from 6000# to 9000# loads on it, and mine pulls it just fine. If the most you pull is a 5500# boat, and only on weekends, I think the 4.10s will do you just fine. Just out of curiosity, who told you Ford doesnt offer 4.10 ratios with the V10? Mine came factory with the 4.10 axle. I think it is only offered on the F350, but I'm not sure.

SRW SD trucks w/ V10 3.73 is standard w/ 4.30 optional . 4.10 only offered w/ 5.4L and diesel ,not w/ V10. Options are same between the F250 and F350.
Who told you you have a 4.10 ?

Dont know who told you that, but its wrong. My 4.10 axle ratio is specified right there on the window sticker from my truck. It is offered on the DRW F350's with the V10. The code on the rear end itself also verifies it. I guess myself and every other V10 owner on this forum that have 4.10 rearends are wrong? I think you need to do a little more reading.

Well, after doing some checking, I see you are right, the 4.10 rear is no longer offered with the V10. In '99, it WAS offered with the V10 in F350's with dual rear wheels. I've got the rear end code and window sticker to prove I have one in mine.

I take it you have a 5 sp manual.
you have 5 gears for a reason. Some guys seem to get ****ed off that their trucks won't pull hills loaded in OD. 5500 pounds is nothing. Down shift and floor it, watch the tack, if you've got more Rs left on the tach then drop another gear and mash it again!
The Tritons will dish out 4000 rpm all day long!
It's not a big block. It's a small bore stroker with 2 more cylinders.

I stand by what I said, but apparantly you didn't notice my shorthand. In my post ," SRW " means single rear wheel. Like you said and I agree, the only way to get the 4.10s is w/ the DRW (dual rear wheel) configuration.
