I made the mistake of buying a new F350 in '97 - w/an automatic transmission. The 1st tranny went out at about 18,000 miles - before I ever even towed w/it. They put the 5th one in at 48,000 miles. I know you can get a lemon in any brand of truck, but my complaint is that Ford just doesn't care - they won't try to find out what the problem is. So I will soon trade the piece of junk off (I have to trade it - couldn't sell it to someone directly w/a clear conscience) & get either a Dodge or Chevy - w/a MANUAL transmission - at least they always stood behind any problems I had w/their trucks. It really grinds me that I will lose so much $$ on this deal - like I said, NO MORE FORDS!!
If you want to make a mistake & go buy a so called truck then feel free. I have a 96 f-350 4x4 that has 123,000 miles & have had to put one torque converter in it & I have pulled up to 30,000 with. I have plowed snow with the truck & anything else that you can put it through & only done that so I consider it to be a TRUE WORK TRUCK which is something that Chevy or Dodge can not say about their trucks. Like I said if you want to buy a truck for looks then go ahead & buy a toy such as those.
my first 97 F-250 PSD,SC,4X4, was the perfect truck. the E40D shifted as weird as any other, but when I traded the truck in at 140,000 miles the trans was still perfect. I do tow and am not generally easy on a truck. I use synthetic fluid (I do not like Dextron-type fluids) and change the fluid every 30,000, but I understand what you are going through. the glowplug relay went out causing the"check engine" light to come on. even though the codes said it was the relay it took five dealers and $500.00 in deductables, before I went and purchased a $18.00 part at napa and fixed it myself (lasted as long as I owned the truck)
the current 97 PSD,CC,DRW,2WD has had no trans problems yet, but again the dealer stands out like a turd in the punchbowl. ford should do better training and insisting on standards with the dealer network they currently have, or make some major changes before it gets really difficult to sell a pickup for $40-50,000.00
