Bad gas milage
Bad gas milage
I find it very puzzling that these multiport injected engines get the poor gas milage that they all seem to get. I had one of the last fullsize broncos that ford made with the 302(5.0L) engine, with throttle body injection and it would consistently get 20-21 mpg on the road and 16-18 in town. I can't remember the exact weight but it was in the 4000 to 5000 range i think. When towing a bass boat I never saw any significate gas milage drop at all and that is with a slightly smaller engine. You would think with all this advanced tech they would get better milage.
The Expys are close to 6000 lbs and the 5.4L is both larger and more powerful than the 5.0L engine. I get crummy mileage in my 5.4L 4x4, but my dad who has a 4.6L 4x2 gets close to what you mention for your Bronco.
When I was towing my boat, the truck and boat together were in the 6000lb range and the 5.0L really pulled alot stronger than the 5.4 does. When I would used the bronco to tow with you could not even tell you had a trailer hooked on back, and we have lots of long hills to climb. My last suv was a gmc suburban, it would run circles around my expedition as far as performance and gas milage but I prefer the ride and drive of the fords. I just feel ford should have and could have designed a better engine for power and gas milage than they did.
Expo's bad gas milage
I had a few Bronco's and never got much more then 13-14 MPG, but My issue is I now own a 2000 Expo Eddie Bower which is a great vehical with the exception of MPG. I have 5.4 triton engine and get about 11.8 MPG not towing. when I hook up my 7000lb. camper I get about 11 MPG, even pulling up in the Adirondacks. Makes no sence that I would only get a little better milage not pulling. Ido not have an engine service light, that apperantly is necessary to have diognostics run on it. I put a K&N filter on it after buying it with 27,ooo miles on the truck. The truck now has 44,ooo miles. Any ideas?
My 98 exp gets around 17mpg on the road if there are very few hills or if there is not a headwind. I pulled a 12' flat tralier a couple times and it pulled my milage down to 10-11 mpg. This tralier was light enough to pick up andr roll around in the grass by hand.
My 94 Bronco with 5.8L originally got about 20-21 highway, 15-16 in town. Now with 4" lift, 33" tires, and 4.10 gears it does about 13-14 in town and 17-18 highway. Wife's 2000 Expedition 4x4 with 5.4L has never done better than 16 highway, lucky to get 12 in town. I've often wondered why the more modern engine fails to do better, but like the Expy well enough to not worry to much about the loss of fuel efficiency.
