I have a 1996 f250 powerstroke 2 wheel drive. I'm thinking of converting it to a 4x4. I found an auto trans with t-case. My questions is: Did the '96 4x4 come with a solid or an ifs axle? Was it leaf or coil sprung? If coil sprung, will the coils hold up to the deisel weight? Will a 1976 F100 front dana 44 front axle swap into it? Any help will be appreciated.
Ok this is one that I have done a lot of research on.
First off, the F250 came out with twin axle suspension. Only the F350 came out with a straight front axle. It is possible to make a conversion using the twin suspensio, but it will require you to use a later model front end. You will need all the hardware, including the leaf springs and shackels. They may be added to the current frame with little work. You can use a front end off any 1980 and newer truck, though you have to be carefull to find the one with twin brake piston calipers. There are two different front ends under F250. One is a light duty and one is a heavy duty. Because of the diesle being so heavy, you need the heavy duty.
I can explain more to anyone who would like info. Just go to my web page for phone
