This maybe a silly question, but I was wondering if the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel of my 98 F250 could be removed. The Set/Coast button tends to stick. I believe the previous owner spilled something gooey on the steering wheel.
I tried to search similar posts, but the only thing I could find was related to the air bag cover. I don't want to damage anything in the process of trying to fix a sticky button
I replaced the switches in my '97. I referred to a service manual and proceeded as follows: Disconnect both battery leads to avoid the potential of the air bag deploying. Remove the small screw covers on the backside of the steering wheel (one on either side). Remove the two screws and the air bag assembly can then be removed from the steering wheel. Once this is removed you will be able to remove the cruise control buttons. I hope this hels.
I sure appreciate the info. This doesn't sound too difficult, but is there any risk of damaging the air bag assembly. My fear is that when I remove the air bag assembly, pieces will start ejecting or popping off and I will be helpless to replace them in the correct order. You mentioned a service manual. Is this something that is readily available? I will take a look at the steering weel and mentally step through procedures you explained. If I can muster up the nerve, I may even try it
Thanks again for the help and I look forward to more input.
I was a little nervous at first too. There were no parts on mine other than the air bag assembly. No springs or pieces etc. Even though the manual does not make a big deal about it, I still treated the air bag assembly like it was going to deploy at any minute
I bought the service manual at Advance Auto Parts, I think it was around $10. You should not have any problems. I had both switches changed in about 30 minutes.
before you start any work around the steering wheel, be sure and disconnect both battery cables and wait about 20 minutes (guidelines say 2 to 5 minutes but i wait 20 just to be on the safe side). After i pull the battery cables, I also leave the highlight switch and ignition switch on just to make sure the vehicle's memory power is out.
This is great stuff. I will follow your recommendations and see if I can find a copy of the service manual. The second person (03f150man) suggested to leave the highlight switch and ignition switch on as well. I'm not familiar with the highlight switch?? I assume that turning the ignition to either auxilary power or one 'position' forward (just before the starter engages) will be sufficient. Is this a correct assumption.
Is the air bag assembly wired into the steering wheel and then through the steering column? In other words can you completely remove the assembly or are there wires that need to be disconnected as well? I'm trying to picture what this will look like.
on my 97, just remove the 2 bolts and the center part of the steering wheel just pulls out in one piece. No springs or clips or other parts that could fall off or that would require reassembly. Just remove the 2 bolts.
