I have an old 81 F150 straight 6 with Dana 44 axels. I need to change the Differential lube (front and back). The owner's manual says to use Hypoid Gear Lubricant with Ford specification ESW-M2C105-A. Does any one know what kind of lube I can use?
Anything that has the API GL-5 rating is good for hypoid gears. 80W-90 is the most common weight. 75W-90 is better for fuel mileage and cold weather, 85W-140 is better for towing in the summer heat.
And if you have limited slip, you probably need to add some LS additive. I use 2 tubes of StaLube additive. Looks like a big tube of toothpaste.
You can tell if you need the additive, if you rear chatters during tight slow turns, especially in reverse. Or check your differential or VIN. The VIN will have a code for LS, check the manual. The diff will have a tag and I think it will say L or LS on it.
I like Valvoline synthetic diff fluid. Some fluids are not compatible with LS so check your diff and the bottle to be sure.
