As for the reasons I did the mods, it wasn't necessarily mileage that I was concerned about, that is just an added bonus. The mods I did also increase power, and with all three of the mods I did, it is a noticeable difference. The fact that my mileage went up a little is great, but not the reason I did the mods.
I did a little more math, after about 50k miles with the mods on, the mods will have paid for themselves in gas saved... so it depends how long you plan on keeping your truck.
I get 11 in town and about 17-18 on the highway with my 01 f150 supercrew 5.4L. I have a airforce One like performance intake and that is all the mods I've done yet so far. The mod did not help one bit for in town driving but added 1.5 to 2 mpg on the highway. From reading the posts, it looks like the newer ones get better mileage in town.
stang 302 open your hood and start the engine that hurricane takes a lot of power to create. today in 97deg heat air on full blast saw no movement in temp gauge the only thing that worried me about the pulleys. last tank with air on and more sitting in traffic than usual got 17.7 these improvements i have made give me more power and i smile as i am getting more and more miles for a tank. I drive 700 miles a week so it is most important to me. o.k. so i like the power to. last truck was a 99 ranger 4banger 5speed man I feel like a king in this truck. All I can say is try it I tend to drive steady so I don't waste much and can keep close check on milage.
Now, if that helps you believe me more than I get 19.5 mpg on the highway at 65, great
I'm glad to see you are getting that kind of mileage. I know a lot of people that have these trucks and the best I have heard of is 16 - 17 mpg. I have never gotten more than about 320 miles on a tank of gas, but my long trips are usually at 75 - 80 mph. My truck has 3.55 gears with 265/70r17's.
The reason I questioned your mileage is because I know a lot of people that claim to get such great mileage, but they never calculate anything out, or they start with an overflowing tank of 25 gallon and then only refill to 22 gallons or something like that. Some people spew crap without any facts.
Didn't mean to PO you.
Which mod you you think helped the most for the money?

I dont really know which mod of mine helped the MOST, I did my K&N on a Friday night and then my exhaust the next day, so I never really drove it long distance without both of them on. They both claim to add the same amount of horsepower/mileage on the web sites I've viewed them on, so I'd imagine that both of their stock counterparts are equally restrictive.
Headers dont really make that big a difference in my opinion. I could feel the difference in power with the K&N, and same with the exhaust, but I didn't notice anything when I did headers a little while later.
So yeah, I'd probably say try a air intake system first, its the easiest install and you get some bang for your buck. Once your truck can breathe though, it needs to be able to exhaust, so thats your next thing to upgrade, the two work together nicely.
If you are into a cool sound, it might be better to go with the exhaust first, because you get some performance gains and a nice sound, the K&N FIPK I installed barely made any difference in sound.
I have an 02 screw cab, 5.4 with a 3.55 rear end. Mods are as follows..... k&n filter, hypertech programmer, and a.r.e. bed cover. Other than that, its completely stock. We just got back from a trip, cruise locked on 75 as much as i could. got 20.5 pmg. Thats in south louisiana where the only hills we have are bridges and overpasses lol. Not sure how it will do in the mountains.........
I've seen that the K&N filters don't filter the best in dusty conditions. People have posted oil analyses that have high levels of Silicon in the oil when running the K&N filters. Maybe they weren't installed or oiled correctly though.
k+n remove silencer, cheap and easy , but underdrive pulleys my favorite, don't think i need electric fan now, want to do muffler and duals next waiting to here whats best
Another difference could be fuel. In MN all fuel has ethanol in it which has a lower energy content than straight gasoline. Some of these people getting better mileage could be in areas that don't use oxygenates in the gas. Just a thought.
