I have a 85 Bronco II 4x4 with a 2.9L fuel injected,, My problem is it will start and run but as it warms up it will die and has a strong gas smell like it's flooded..After about 15 - 20 minutes it will start back up and run until it get warm then it'll die again.. Have just bought this thing and haven't been able to dive it yet ,, ANY IDEAS ?
1st: double check which engine you have. The '85 BII's originally came with the 2.8 L engine which was carburated. If you truly do have the 2.9 L multi-port fuel injected engine, someone has swapped it in after the fact. Do you know which year 2.9 you have? If it's a swapped in 2.9, did the engine ever run right after it was put in?
One problem common to both the 2.8 and 2.9 is the TFI module (aka ignition module. mounts to the distributor), and when it is failing, it will give similar symptoms. Checking for trouble codes in the computer can help in diagnosing this. Another thing to check is, is the stalling due to a lack of fuel, or a lack of spark. Excessive gasoline smell suggests that the gas is there, but not getting burned.
I have the same problem with my 86 BII w/ 2.9L. I am current and active in the thread titled ' Rich fuel mixture situation woes' if you want to peek over there and see the things I have done. Might help out in you narrowing the problem down quicker. If you find your solution, let us know so if its something that I have not looked at yet, I can check it. I will do the same in return if I figure out whats going on my side as well.
It sounds almost 100% identical symptoms, engine starts very easily, let it run for a few minutes till it gets close to operating temp, press on the gas, if you dont play with it, it will flood out and die. The only way to get it to run again is to either let it sit for a while or press all the way down on the throttle and crank it and it will eventually start but its dumping black smoke and chugs real bad for a bit till it gets caught up?
Good luck! Like I said, if I find the solution to my problem, I will definatly post what the fix was in hopes that it MAY be the same for you.
