transmission problem

i have an 87 BII with a 2.9 4X4 auto trans. Here's the problem: i can move just fine in reverse, but in drive i have to almost redline my engine for itto engage and then i can't let it go to idle or it won't go forward again. I've checked the fluid and changed the fluid, filter, and it still doesn't work. Can anyone help me.

When you changed the filter, did you get the two o-rings on the filter in place? Did they stay in place when the filter was installed?
