Firing Order

02 Ranger 3.0L - Dealer said the plug order is:

front
1 4
2 5
3 6

and the label on my coil pack is:

front
3 4
2 6
1 5

Is this correct? I'm probably doing this wrong, but the service dept. at my local Ford dealership said to just match the number on the coil pack with the number of plug. I did so and now the truck will not even start. How do I hook the wires up from plug to coil pack according to the numbering above? Also, what is meant by "Firing Order?" I appreciate the feedback and all the help so far. Thanks again!!

You gotta be kidding me. Pretty bad when the dealership doesn't even know what they're doing. Thanks for the help Bob, I greatly appreciate it.

And just to make sure I got it right, I match the number on the Coil Pack Label to the plug number correct??

Thanks again

I got everything hooked up according to the picture, thank you by the way, but she still has that same ole nasty idle. I went with the Autolite plugs (AP 104) and the Motorcraft wires...had the plugs gaped at about .045. I also put in a bottle of the Techron fuel injection cleaner earlier last week and haven't really been able to tell much difference. Took it for a test drive and the engine still idles bad and "skips" till I get up to about 60-70. Guess I'll just have to break down and take her to Ford to see what their "super machines" spit out. Or should I go through another bottle or two of the Injector cleaner before I take it up there? I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance!!

Has it thrown a CEL (Check Engine Light)? If it has, you can take it to Autozone and have the error codes scanned out.

Yeah, it had one last week and it read "Cyl 4 Misfire." Does that mean there is a Spark Plug or Plug Wire problem...??? =\ I haven't had one come back on since I changed out the plugs and all today... course, I haven't done much driving since then either.

Took the ole girl to Ford and had them run a diagnostic on it. Came back and said it was a bad fuel injector and they wanted another $80.00 to figure out which one. I asked them about the CEL code I got..."Cyl. 4 misfire"...and if that would likely be the injector which is malfunctioning? Needless to say, I never got a straight answer out of them. Would that be a good place to start? Is there any way for me to test the injectors? Thanks in advance!!

Check all the wire harness connectors to the fuel injectors. Pull them off and spray them down with electrical contact cleaner, then re-attach them snugly.

Also, get a long screwdriver and press your ear against the handle and listen while you touch the tip of the screwdriver against each injector body. You should hear a consistent clicking sound in all of them. You might be able to tell if # 4 sounds "funny" this way.

Thanks for the advice Rockledge! I'll have to run get some cleaner tomorrow and give it a whirl. Already got a screwdriver that'll work perfectly, good idea! I've never worked on Injectors before though, how hard is it to get them unplugged? I greatly appreciate all the help and patience!

They should unclip like regular harness connectors that you find on most sensors. A few of the the injectors might be a little tough to reach, so take your time.

Rockledge-

Just wanted to say thanks for your help! I cleaned out the connectors to all my fuel injectors like you siad and the ole girl is running like a charm. No more rough idle or bad misses. I disconnected the harnesses, sprayed them down good 3 or 4 times and plugged them back up. Anyhow, just thought I'd pass on the success. Thanks again!

Honestly, I'm surprised it was that simple. But it just goes to show that a little diagnosis can go a long way.
