Ok, I just took delivery of my 2000 SD 350 diesel. I love it so far but ask me again in about 15-20 years.
I have an old beater to drive daily so I will not be putting huge amounts of daily driving miles on this vehicle. Now I would like to get some answers of the pluses and minuses of rustproofing.
Ziebart, Waxoyl, Crown, rusty Jones... There are so many.
Some say it helps, some say it hurts etc etc.
So I would greatly appreciate your opinions of the best longterm rust prevention strategy. I know that the most important thing is cleanliness with frequent spraydowns of the underside. But are any of the rust programs necessary and helpful?
Best product that I've found is one that the professionals call "grease". The guy that does my work say his comes from Texaco. For me it's great. Doesn't get hard and crack. Even after 5-6 years it will ocassional "run" out the rain holes at the bottom of the doors. If you can find something like this, It's the best that I've used. Previously used Ziebart and similar type products with less than not as good of results.
Especially for up here in Northern Wisconsin "tropics of artica" Arlan
we were Waxoyl, and they are out of business after we sued them for failure to honor warranties etc. We distibuted the plroduct in all of North Amercia, anyone selling that brand now is selling some other product and no real warranty. Rusty Jones is out of business. We are Automotive Interantionl and provide DamilerChrysler their Master Sheild products for rust preventative, paint sealant, fabric and undercoating. The same products are sold through other dealers such as Ford, GM etc under the ValuGard name.
Like anything is it is not properly applied, it will not perform as designed. We have product on over 12 million vehicles and have very few claims, so small you would not beleive. Why? We require the dealer and installer to jump through a few "hoops" in order to sell and install the products. If you would like to see how these products are to be installed, what paint really looks like, Ford Tech Tips, TSB's regarding paint etc. All of which will aid you in deciding wether or not to make a purchase check out www.autoint.com
I am not trying to sell you anything, we will not sell the warranty rust, paint, fab, undercoat direct to consumers, so please understand, I am just attempting to provide you some tech info on these concerns.
Consider the use of POR 15. A product which converts existing rust to a compound of iron, probably iron phosphate which is a continuous, insoluble conversion product that will not allow further corrosion. It also provides an excellent "paint" finish that presents an excellent surface for color topcoating. I have used it on my backhoes and bulldozers and it performs extremely well. I just finished treating the entire undercarriage on my '93 F150. I am very satisfied with the product. Incidentally, I have had experience with the non-reactive "rustproofing" SCAMS. To put it in the vernacular, They just aint no good!.
