I want to improve airflow through my V10 ('99 F350 SD) and at the same time improve performance. I have been using the K&N filter which allows more air in, what exhaust system matches up well with a higher flow air filter like the K&N? What size pipes? Cat back or manifold back? I do a lot of hunting so I don't need it to "sound cool" or "growl". I just want my V10 airpump to pump most efficiently.
Any brand headers will help the flow. You may feel a loss of low end torque but this can be fixed by placing venturris in the y-pipe. Make sure you get a new y-pipe when you add in a set of headers.
The stock cat-back section is already a fairly healthy size piece of pipe. Cut out the stock muffler and weld in a Flowmaster 40 series or 70 series.
I agree with Heavy Assault. I might suggest just changing the stock muffler out to a freer-flowing muffler first, drive it for a while and see if the difference is enough for what you had in mind. If not, then consider the headers and Y-pipe. Also, by doing it step-by-step, you get the chance to notice what difference each addition makes versus slapping it all on at once.
Just my $.02, and by no means is my intention to undermine another's opinion (especially since I've come to recognize that Heavy Assault seems very much to know what he's talking about)...
i replaced my stock muffler with a magna flow SS muffler and a magnaflow SS 4" tip cost about $175 installed. not too loud just slightly deeper. with a litter better performance. i put headers (jba) on my last truck 4.6 v8 it was a major pain in the ***, and it felt like i lost power definetly not worth the money for the little amount of power you gain. for more power i would get a chip or gears.
That loss of power was the low end TQ loss I was referencing. I had discussed adding a supercharger with a rep at Whipple. It was stated that the headers are not a recommended addition to a supercharger because of the low end loss. I called Borla and discussed this with their techs. They sent me two venturris ( Can you believe FREE of charge? Yes...FREE) and a diagram of the location for install in the y-pipe. I got some strange looks at the exhaust shop but they welded in the pieces. To my surprise they worked to bring the low end back to the truck. Felt just as good as stock. For $50 labor it had to be the cheapest power addition I have done.
DS59F100 makes good sense. Used to be you knew what to do to an engine. But with the modenization of travel, you go one step at a time 'till you see a difference. Thank all of you for your input!
I installed a set of Borla headers and the supplied 'y' pipe. Also a Flowmaster. I could not tell a loss of low end. If I nail it at 1,200 rpm, she jumps. It's quite loud, though, with a 4" tailpipe. I had to make a deflector for the exhaust, because it was melting the shock boot, e-brake cable cover and spare tire.
I would love to hear the Banks system. I have a FM 40 on mine now and want to step up to the Banks power Pack. SOUND CLIPS PLEASE. Been searching the web for sound clips but found none for the V10. Why are we so left out in the after market? Everywhere you go you can find something for a diesel.
I want to try something different than the FM. Someone else said it "sounds like an import on roids". Been looking at a lot of different systems and Banks sounds like the best.
