I want to rotate the tires each time I change the oil in my supercab 4X4 longbed SuperDuty. I really don't want to take it to the dealer for just a tire rotation.
I've got a 2-ton hydraulic service jack but no jack stands. Can anyone tell me how they get both the back and front of a 7500# truck off the ground at the same time to swap wheels?
Should I just get a second jack? Should I use a pair of stands and not rely on the jack?
If stands are best, what size (X-ton, and the mix/max height) should I get? Exactly where do they go under the truck? Pardon the ignorance, but I've never worked on something this size.
You really need top quality jack stands at every corner of your truck if you intend to do a 4 wheel tire rotation. These heavy duty trucks are *heavy* beasts and can't really be supported by a couple of jacks.
I'd recommend 4 jackstands and one jack. Putting the truck up on the jackstands is not difficult at all, and once on stands, you can work on it safely.
You want to support the truck with jackstands under the front and rear axles. Take some measurements from the ground each axle to find the right height for your stands. I'd go with 4 ton stands that have wide and stable bases.
Yep - use jack stands. You should never ever use a jack to support a vehicle that you will work on/under. I know people that do it - but something could happen and the jack could release where a jackstand is locked in place. Definitely better safe than sorry with a heavy truck!!
I jack up in the middle and do a front/rear rotation at each side ,but you guy's are right it could be dangerous (i don't get under my truck without jackstands)
