6.9L performance

does anyone know how far you can turn up the pump on the 6.9 without ignighting the engine?
i'm thinkin of buyin a 6.9..and i wanna pull with it....but 170/307 isn't my idea of power..
A diesel mechanic friend (doesn't have much experience) said 20% should be good....but i wanna go more and beat his dodge in the pulls.
is it safe??

If your talking about the fuel it is not reccomended to turn it up for more power. As it is they tend to burn more fuel as the injectors wear out and all that does is smoke alot. If you want more power you need to step up to a turbo. You can check the timing and maybe get a bit more out of that but you need a special tool to use with a timing light. Mine was 225 off the SnapOn truck. Keep your eyes open for a 7.3L and install that.

You can turn the fuel up, but very slightly. Depending on the elevation you live. The lower the more oxigen content. You can only turn it up 1/2 to 1 side of the allen wrench you use to adjust. You should remove the plate inside the air cleaner to allow more air to enter. This will only give you marginal and maybe not even a noticeable gain. The best solution is the turbo. I would change the gear ratio. My truck was originally a 4.10 and I went to a 3.54 with an ATS Turbo. Works great.

You are wanting to out pull his dodge what? Cummins? The Cummins is a turbo motor versus the naturally asperated Navistar. Dave is right. a Turbo is the answer. Leave the injector pump adjustments to the older cats and cummins heavy engines. Your 6.9 should pull just fine anyway. Mine with an automatic and 4.10 gears hasn't let me down yet.
