6.9 Diesel Performance?

ok, i'm thinking of tradeing my uncle trucks, mine is an 89 f-150 302 auto(power everything) and his is an 87 f-250 w/6.9 5 speed and a base model, he bought an 01 PSD so all he uses his old diesel for is driving in the pasture, he said he'd trade me but i wanna take my CD player and swap his manual windows for my power ones and so on. my question is are there any performance upgrades for them? somethin that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? also will the 6.9 get better than 13mpg? thanks in advance, justin

A turbo is about the only thing that will give you a real improvement in power. But thats about $2000 or more new. If anyone knows anything else I would like to know. I would like more out of mine too.

You said it, the turbo is the only real improver for a n/a truck. It is not very hard to put a turbo onto a diesel - it is not like a supercharger or even a turbo on a gas engine, with computer concerns.. Getting a used turbo from a junkyard and testing it for strength, and smoothness will cost a lot less, and could be done in a weekend.

You talkin about adjusting the timing with the injector pump. Did this but doesn't do much for it.

The turbo won't do squat unless you increase the volume of fuel injected. If you Increase the fuel volume it will make more power even without a turbo. all you have to do is adjust the fuel setting on that pump. If it is a roosa-master like I think it is the adjustment should be under that cap that has the shut off solinoid on it

Man I don't know about that. When you pull hard or accelerate hard you see lots of black smoke out of one of these old N/A diesels. That is unburned fuel. Has anybody done this with their pickup.

it is not unburnt fuel. it is a form of combustion called cracking where some of the carbon part of the molicule is left over and blown out the exaust,,,It is not as inefficiant as you would think and it makes power like all hell

Justin89: Mileage and performance are mutually exclusive terms (you can't have both) without a turbo, fuel additive, or both. Turning up the fuel rate setting will drive your mileage further down the toilet than it is now. A rebuilt turbo is fairly cheap, easy to install, and will give your best bang for the buck.

Curm, i was thinking of getting a manifold turbo and the pipping off of a 7.3 turbo diesel(not PSD) but 1. i don't know it the manifold and pipes will work on the 6.9 and 2. the 7.3 is computer controled correct? and the 6.9 isn't?

Let me get this straight you guys are going to do nothing but blow more air in the intake and you think this is going to produce more power?

Unless his engine is shot, at 13 MPG he is already wasting about 20% of his potential motive power, part of which could be extracted with a turbo.

My Navistar guy says depending on the manufacturer, a non-wastegate turbo from pre-1994 7.3's should fit your 6.9.

ok, well my uncle sold his diesel today so i'm stuck with the 302 for now, but i was driving another uncle's 2001 PSD all day saturday and i really want one, although i can't afford a 38,000 dollar truck. but i was thinking if i got an older 6.9 or 7.3 put a stock turbo setup on it, bigger injectors(if i can afford them, or if they even make them) advance the pump and put on propane injection(will this blow a diesel up like nitrous does to a gas motor?). and then i think it'll be as fast as my stock 302 and if it gets better than 13mpg then i'll be happy.

Yopu know when you turn the fuel up you can still get good fuel mileage by not pressing that petal on the right quite so hard,,,,,And when you need the power you just push it a little harder and watch your pyrometer (egt),,,,You Just can't let someone without a brain drive it
