Hey all: I have a 2003 F250 with a 7.3 Powerstroke. I recently installed a 4" downpipe back exhaust with a straight thru muffler. I have decided that I cannot live with the picket fencing or flutter sound that I get out of the exhaust when accelerating or running about 1500 rpm. It is especially loud when I am under acceleration while towing. I posted this on the diesel board awhile back and the conclusion was that the sound relates to the exhaust pulses.....was a pretty technical discussion but made sense to me.
So....I have lived with the sound for a while and really need to make a change. The muffler that was installed was nothing fancy just a standard aftermarket inexpensive system. I was wondering since I did NOT have this sound prior to the muffler change, would it make sense to go with a better quality muffler? I don't mind losing a little free flow in order to get a better sound and reduce that flutter....drives me nuts especially with the windows open. Any thoughts out there?
Airstream, take a look at the specs on the Hooker Aero Chamber muffler. It's a "straight through" design but cancels sound waves with a "stepped" system, not fiberglass packing. I have one on my Explorer and it did increase the low end torque, which you need when towing.
It's a quiet muffler with a deep sounding tone, and no droning at highway speeds. Hooker Aero Chamber Muffler
Hey lone ranger I have seen you post on a couple of muffler threads promoting the hooker aero chamber, I have a 24" magnaflow mounted in stock position to minimize any reasonance inside the cab. And man it's quiet with a little growl. The holley hooker aero sounds like what I should have put on. A nice tone, great flows and as I understand an increase in torque. Who knew ?
1960,
Is the flutter sound like the stock sound v10 muffler setups have maybee it's too restrictive. All I know is there are three types of mufflers. absorbtion, reflecition, and restriction, but as lone ranger notes the Hooker Aero Chamber is an absorbtion with a twist, an expantion chamber. Look at Holley.com and go to speed links to Hooker and check out the Aero. Then send a question to thier tech support about the v10 application.
Good luck.

Yeah, Gears, I don't mean to bore everyone with how great the Hooker is , it's just that I was so amazed when I took a test drive after the installation. It actually DID increase torque. It's also very quiet for a performance muffler, so it's not for those who want a loud sound. Actually the Magnaflow or the Dynomax Ultra Flow would have been my second choice.
Airstream, there's another muffler out there that's supposed to be good with turbo diesels; it's called an AeroTurbine. Aero Turbine Muffler They are relatively expensive, and from other posts I've read, they're loud. The technology behind them seems sound, though.
The Aeroturbine is also supposed to do the same thing and work almost as well installed after the stock muffler. Got that right from thier site, one of the videos I think.
I put my muffler on about a month ago and repositioned the exit to side (see my gallery) but a couple weeks ago just browsing thru the web and remembered an old name Holey, There it was Aero Chamber. I am interested to hear sombody that has one on and has some good feedback on it. Also I would have preffered it over the Mangnaflow just on the description alone.
It is fantastic that other members can read too your experence.
Questions, What length is on your truck and where is it positioned ?
351m, Is that also Hooker/Holley product ?
1960, and all, Is there any thing about diameter and keeping the exhaust gassed hot so pulsing expantion err uh I read some kind of tech stuff about that. (help)

Aeroturbine is not Hooker. www.Aero-turbine.com And there should be a link to some videos on the site, as well as sound clips. That will give you a good idea what they will sound like on your truck. They aren't supposed to be that loud in the cab I think they do bark a bit outside.

Gears, it is a 14" long muffler, and I have it in the stock position. It's directly behind the cat, with several feet of exhaust pipe exiting out the back. (That's an interesting installation on yours. I've never seen a pipe curved like that for a side exit.) Hey, if it works, why not.....
Lone,
Thanks for the feedback. The stock muffler on my truck was 36" long mounter ending just before the rear axle. If I didn't have to worry about reasonance in the cab, I wouldn't of had to be so creative with an aftermarket hp muff. Maybee when the packing starts to break down I'll step up to the aero.
351,
I will check out the site, and thanks for the lead. I have a strange interest in mufflers and applications and look foreward to the new tag.
1960,
Hey howw is your situation comming along? Are ya tired of us old ladies gabbing on your thread? Any feedback on vender websites for v10 performance related issues yet ?
