I called the comp cam helpline and this dude I talked to was an ahole and didn't give me very good info. All he wanted to do was get me to upgrade my valvetrain.
Right now I have an RV cam in my truck and I don't know if it's the right cam for what I want.
Does anyone know a good performance cam that I can use with my stock valvetrain?
Would it even be worth it to switch 'em out? I'm already going to need to change some gaskets anyway.
Most of the recommended cams, ie the crane 901 which is popular for the FE, have a similar grind to that of an "RV" (term used to refer to hotter with great torque) cam. You really need to know what grind is in there now to progress forward.
Mike G, I found the box that my cam came in. It's a EPWI Performance MC1776:
Cam INT: .285
Lift EXH: .303
Valve INT: .501
Lift EXH: .533
ADV. DUR. 260 INT 272 EXH
.50 DUR 204INT 216EXH
Wow, glad I found it. What do you think?
Led_Sled, the cam the tech guy was telling me to get was a 270 Magnum but he said I needed a lot of upgrading at cost of $440 kit+!
BB, I don't know. I don't like the idle of it. It's not lopey enough at idle, doesn't sound as mean as it should. But if it's a good cam I will stay with it. I was just wondering if I have a good cam or should I upgrade?
Same specs as the CRANE 901, GREAT for a mild performance build with the stock valve train. Not too many folks recommend pushing the stock stuff with more than 500 of lift, that's probably where the recommended expenses came from in your quest for the Comp 270.
what kind og mods did he tell you that was needed? i ran it with the stock valvetrain and factory springs, never had a prob. everything was in good shape too though.
Mike G, I'm VERY glad to hear that I didn't get screwed on the cam thing. Sounds like a good one.
led sled, the tech guy was saying that I needed stiffer valve springs and longer pushrods. Saying that if I went racing it would "blow a valve". He was still a ***** no matter what.
A good stock valve train will handle up to a .550 lift. If your looking for a little lopey idle look at the @.050 specs and your lobe seperation. I am running a Comp 292h cam with a heavier springs but with stock rocker setup. i had to get new pushrods made because of the high lift but it works great. I have had it up to 6500 rpm before and never had a problem yet. Comp makes a real good cam but so does Crane. But i can tell you the hotter the cam you want the more mods you will have to make on your engine such as Headers, possibly gears and a stall covertor(if your running automatic) you have a pretty nice cam. It is jsut a real slow lift cam, mainly designed for pulling and low end torgue. good luck with what ever you go with!!
polcat, thanks for the great info. I'm learing little at a time. At this point I think I've decided to stay with the cam. The FE has enough torque to pull my 4500-5000 shift points, so I don't need to go to 6500 (like you said, no need to go that high with stock stuff)
I'm pretty happy with my truck as of now since I fixed my problem. (see thread:
glad to hear you stuck with that cam ceetwarrior. i would have chose to do the same. them guys over at comp are dicks !! but there only covering there own butts by telling you all that . that cam with some tweeking can make you some nice power. what other goodies are you running with that cam?
led sled, I think that's a good decision to make to stay with it, works good why change. I just needed some reassurnance.
My setup is a C7AE 352, .030 over, 390 crank + rods, '68 428CJ 4bbl cast iron intake, Holley 600cfm vac sec 4bbl, that cam, hedman headers with straight duel cherry bombs exiting in front of the rear wheels. Other than that my motor is all OEM type parts, nothing fancy (I built it old school on purpose). And my truck is a '67 f100, shortbox, D60 LS 3.54, T18 4-speed (hopefully this summer to be a toploader 4speed). It's my baby
your set up seems pretty good ! nothing wrong with going old school ! the only thing i would change is the intake . i would change over to an edelbrock rpm. also i would go with an electronic ignition, if you already don't have one. my 74 is my baby too !! nice rig you got, checked out your pics. hope you have as much fun with yours as i have with mine.
led sled, I updated my album with some new pics. Here's a motor shot. I didn't go with any alum because that's not old school Don't worry about me having fun, cuz it's a blast drivin it!
