Exclamation Lesson learned on throttle linkage!!

I got my motor all done and my truck licensed and I got stopped at a stoplight next to this '03 Duramax and we went at it and he beat me! So here I was all PO'd/bummed about that so I come home trying to find the problem with my truck. I knew that my '67 with 390, headers, cam, 4bbl intake, 4160 Holley, duels w/cherry bombs, shortbox, 4-speed SHOULDN'T lose to a DuraCrap!!! So:

I start messing with my carb adjusting the float bowls praying to find the answer to my problem. I had my friend get in the cab and floor the pedal (not running) and found that it was only opening up my carb 3/4 of the way. So I am dinking around with spring and I found that the spring I had was too strong. And I also found that my throttle linkage has a built in spring inside of it so if there was too much pressure it would give some slack causing my throttle not to open up (for some odd reason)! So I stretched the spring and took my truck on a test drive only to find my rear end hopping and spinning in 2nd gear and wouldn't go anywhere, then shifting to 3rd and having that 4bbl open up, WOW.

So, the whole time I was driving around thinking I was flooring it, it wasn't getting floored which means my vac sec's weren't opening up either!

If only I could find that Duramax again.... he'd be so far behind me I wouldn't know what to do. So the moral of the story is check your throttle linkage everyone because we don't need any Bowtie guys going home bragging about beating our Fords!

Make sure you have dual throttle return springs as a backup for failures. Most external throttle springs have two springs, one inside the other.

Are you using some sort of cable throttle linkage?

Torque1st, no it's the factory linkage I'm assuming.

From what I understand there are 3 springs on my setup:

-a built in spring in the adjustable linkage
-built in Holley carb return spring
-and my spring I added which goes to a little bracket on the back of my intake (that is the spring that was too tight causing my throttle linkage spring to act and strectch out, not allowing my throttle to open all the way up)

I worked on a lot of those trucks but I don't remember a setup like that.
