I don't have a breakdown on production numbers. The website I took the engine number prefix from isn't working this morning, but 99C or 99T was a prefix Ford used starting in 1939 as a head (only) casting number and may have been used until '45 when the 59A/59AB heads were used.

"Generally" - The first 9 indicated production beginning in '39. Second 9 indicates V8. T indicates large truck (1 ton or larger). The stars on either end indicates this was the original ford serial number.

The trouble is, by modern vin standards these don't tell much and are inconsistent. For more info check out fordbarn.com or mac vanpelt's website

vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_home.htm

Someone there might have the production number breakdown for trucks.

Hi Tim

Thanks for the info in the VIN for the 47. Can you tell me if the I in the middle (* 799Y206 I 455 *) is actually and I (eye) or a 1 (one)? I thought I saw somewhere else on this site that it was a one. Just want to make sure before trying to get it registered.

Thanks again!

Yep, it's a 1 (one). Ford didn't use the letter "I" in the vin strings - they just skipped right from H to J.

47coeman-- How the hell did you find out that approx 55K '38-47 COEs were built???? I need to learn this, being a compulsive number-cruncher & '40 COE owner. Hopefully you still read these forums........

On my '40 COE it's on the top of the crossmember that's right in front of the engine, stamped in.

47 Coe Vin#

Would the # be on the crossmember that the radiator sits on top of?

Yes: not the one the grille hooks to, nor the one that runs under the fan belt(s), but the one in between. Like I said- that's where mine is, tho it's hard to read. I could not get a legible pencil rubbing for the titling process (had to have a notarized statement instead).

COE VIN# Location

Thanks for the info, WQ95B, on the VIN# location. It was right where you said, but so faint you can barely see it.
Now I can finish this registration process that began in Dec!
Thanks again!!!!
